Energy Ministry Backs Down from Time of Sale Energy Audits
http://www.thestar.com/article/625446Rob Ferguson Toronto Star
QUEEN’S PARK BUREAU
A backlash from consumers and the real estate industry over a plan to require energy audits every time a home is sold has prompted Energy Minister George Smitherman to back down.
The audits – which raised concerns that information could be used to beat down the price on the seller’s home – will no longer be mandatory under amendments to the government’s Green Energy Act now working its way through the Legislature.

Landscaping For Energy Conservation
Planting trees around your home can reduce heating and cooling needs significantly. In the summer, shade trees planted on the east, west and southerly sides of your home can save 25-40% and reduce peak energy demand by up to 30%, according to a study by the University of California Berkeley. Evergreen trees planted for windbreak purposes on the north side of your property can save you 6-11% on winter heating energy needs. Shading your air conditioning unit with shrubs allows it to run more efficiently, saving you even more!

Green Realtor Supports the Green Energy Act
B150 is an important piece of legislation.
The time of sale energy label is of particular importance to achieving the
13.8% energy production target from conservation.
I teach Realtors all over the province about climate change and energy
inflation. The consistent feedback regarding energy efficiency is that the
market is apathetic or uneducated about energy issues when purchasing.
Bill150 has the power to enable Ontario Realtors to put a value on home energy
efficiency, from insulated walls to GeoThermal heating systems, disclosure of
household energy performance is paramount to monetising energy efficiency at
time of sale.

Solar-power feed tariffs windfall for homeowners

Ontario’s power authority has proposed paying 80.2 cents for every kilowatt-hour it buys from a residential rooftop solar system.
That’s rich. It amounts to an 82 per cent increase over the previous rate offered under the province’s standard offer program, which was launched two years ago but failed to stimulate large-scale deployment of rooftop systems that was envisioned.
This time the government is more serious about driving demand. The ambitious aim is to see 100,000 solar rooftop systems deployed across the province as a result of the newly proposed rate, which is called an advanced feed-in tariff.

Jordy Gold
March 16, 2009 2:56 AM
For years sustainablists have been pushing the corporate sector to go green. A key question or doubt has hung over this push—will consumers really buy green stuff? For years pundits have pointed to polls that show that consumers are interested in buying green. The results have been mixed, if not downright negative, with green product sales often failing to live up to expectations.

March 12, 2009

http://www.ontario-sea.org/Storage/30/2197_World_Class_Solar_Tariffs_for_North_America.pdf
(Toronto, Ontario) Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure,
George Smitherman, announced today that the Ontario Power
Authority (OPA) will be establishing a system of feed-in tariffs as a
result of the pending Green Energy and Green Economy Act.
Minister Smitherman also released OPA’s proposed tariffs for a
host of renewable energy technologies.
If implemented, the package of tariffs will represent the first
application of Advanced Renewable Tariffs in North America. The
system of feed-in tariffs envisioned by Minister Smitherman is a
Canadian version of the successful policies used in Germany,
France, Spain, and several other European countries.
OPA will begin public consultation on the tariffs and elements of
the program March 17th and will continue hearings for the next
seven weeks.
