Leafy Green Infrastructure Can Prepare Cities For Climate Change

Date: Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Time: 3:15 – 5:00 p.m.
Location: Sheraton Centre, 123 Queen Street West – Huron Room (2nd Floor)

“Increasing our investment in leafy green infrastructure can significantly help cities reduce green house gas emissions and begin to adapt to the heat waves that are projected,” said Steven W. Peck, President, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.  “Cooling Ontario’s cities by 1 degree Celcius in the summer can save hundreds of megawatts of energy and millions of dollars used to power air conditioners.” he added.

“The CitiesAlive panel discussion will be a chance to hear contrasting visions of what a city with fully developed green infrastructure would look like” said Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller, Chair of the Round Table Discussion.  “Is it possible to grow a green infrastructure industry and grow a green economy simultaneously!” he added.

McGuinty Government Announcement Positions Ontario as Renewable Energy Leader
Government receives praise for renewable energy programs, but local content requirement may fail to support job creation
Toronto – Local and international environmental and renewable energy groups congratulated the Ontario government today for four new programs that will make the province a global leader in clean, green, renewable energy.
“We are thrilled that the government has followed through on its pledge to make Ontario a global leader in renewable energy,” said Deb Doncaster, Executive Director of the Community Power Fund. “The new feed-in tariffs and approval process provide an excellent environment for the renewable energy industry, while new resources for the community power sector mean that individuals and communities will directly benefit from the government’s plans.”

Energy Ministry Backs Down from Time of Sale Energy Audits

http://www.thestar.com/article/625446Rob Ferguson Toronto Star
QUEEN’S PARK BUREAU

A backlash from consumers and the real estate industry over a plan to require energy audits every time a home is sold has prompted Energy Minister George Smitherman to back down.

The audits – which raised concerns that information could be used to beat down the price on the seller’s home – will no longer be mandatory under amendments to the government’s Green Energy Act now working its way through the Legislature.

Landscaping For Energy Conservation

Planting trees around your home can reduce heating and cooling needs significantly.  In the summer, shade trees planted on the east, west and southerly sides of your home can save 25-40% and reduce peak energy demand by up to 30%, according to a study by the University of California Berkeley.  Evergreen trees planted for windbreak purposes on the north side of your property can save you 6-11% on winter heating energy needs.  Shading your air conditioning unit with shrubs allows it to run more efficiently, saving you even more!
