Hot Property – What does the Future Hold for Canada’s Ski Town Real Estate

Imagine Whistler without snow but for the lower altitude ski areas of Whistler Mountain it was already starting in 2007. It is not only a possibility, but we have seen in this year’s Olympic coverage there seems a constant flow of flippant comments about Rain and Fog. Impacts are so pressing that resort operators have been looking to climate forecasters to help them mitigate risk and creatively plan for future business success. Real Estate holdings, Mountain operations, development and profitability are on the table. For the benefit of the planet, both skiers and resorts are beginning to undergo intense reconciliation.

World ski Mecca Whistler BC was the host location for the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia’s Conference (REIBC) on the Effects of Climate Change on Real Estate a few years ago. While there I had the pleasure of attending a series of expert talks presented by Insurance companies and scientists. As a lifetime skier and snowboard fanatic, I was saddened to hear that the future of many of the world’s ski resorts are not only at risk, but are bracing themselves for lasting decline in natural ski conditions. According to the Arthur deJong, Spokesperson for Whistler Resort, “within projected 4 degree increase in global average temperature we anticipate the closure of 75% of the world’s ski resorts”. This should come as no surprise with mounting awareness of accelerated world wide glacial melting and general atmospheric warming.  The question weighing on my mind is ‘what are the implications for real estate holdings as a result of the hard-hitting messages from scientific researchers evaluating impacts of climate change on real estate in BC; from insurance and liability to food security and drought the risks are mounting’.

Reduce your cost of Green Renovation with an ecoenergy audit

Renovating is costly, but there are grant monies available from the Federal and Provincial governments. If you are renovating, you should be taking advantage of incentive programs including ecoEnergy. ecoEnergy offers grants for improving the systems of your house. As much as 10,000 dollars in grants are available for green home improvements ranging from high efficiency furnace replacement to caulking and sealing the air leaks in your home.

Anyone planning a renovation should consider getting an ecoEnergy audit. “The money invested in an ecoEnergy audit will save you money and help you prioritize energy savings”, says Chris Winter at the Conservation Council. Grants are available for the following, and your ecoEnergy auditor will file the paperwork for you.

Cadorin Homes Challenge Realtors to LEED Way to Green Realty

Realtor Challenge invited realtors to compete for the LEED
registered listing by demonstrating their ability to market and sell sustainable homes.
“For this grassroots shift to take shape, realtors needed to understand the emerging
market for sustainable homes and communicate this to buyers” says, Lynn Da Pra of
Cadorin Homes.

The Green Realtor Challenge set out to find the cream of the crop in green realty, and
chose three teams, dedicated to delivering more value to the end client. The winning
realtors were: Marc Paillé of Bosley Real Estate; the Bosley Real Estate “Green Team” of
Elspeth Sinclair, Pat Laughren and Carolyn Marit; and Ryan Coyle of Remax Unique.
See theteamgoesgreen.com for an example of how realtors are marketing sustainable
housing in Toronto.

Holiday Gift Giving, Shop Sustainable.ca written by Chris Chopik of Evolution Green Share

Each year when I return to my mother’s home for Christmas I know that there is a good chance that the stocking is full of oranges, liquor miniatures and fair trade-organic 70% dark chocolate. True, we have evolved from cheesy plastic dollar store items which had some subtle humour or momentary amusement, and there are even occasionally such items as a book about buying Green Christmas Gifts. I have seen stockings where each trinket is wrapped in plastic coated foil paper. When everyone is finished the unwrapping there is a garbage bag filled with unrecyclable paper, tape and ribbon. All of this and we haven’t even touched on the footprint of the gifts themselves.
