Installing solar in the winter? In Toronto?
It looks like another half day for the installers,as the snow starts to fall and the wind starts to whip up.Oh well,we have to get a good inventory done soon, before the spring boom starts.I just hope we get the winter boom dealt with first! I know.I hear you.Install Solar in the winter in Canada? They must be nuts. Actually we do avoid shingled roofs in Jan Feb and Mar. but flat roofs, and steel and aluminum shingled roofs are good to work on year round.Using good safety practices, and wise work habits (not to mention warm clothes) our installers can work year round. They also like a challenge ! They recently installed an awning style solar array that reduces the sun falling on the south side of the house in the summer, reducing the cooling load while allowing the winter sun to reach into the room, passively heating the house in the winter. I know the installers like a job when they let me know they were taking pictures while they were working. That is a good sign that they are not only proud of their work, but that they want to share it with others as well. Anyone with a south facing wall that heats up in the summer should consider a similar setup. Reduce your cooling load while reducing your electrical footprint ,and increasing the resale value of your house-win,win,win.
