Solar PV Tech Checklist

Solar Panels are more useful than Granite Counter Tops
When it comes to home improvements the usefulness of an item is often understated. For example, when was the last time someone commented on how beautiful the roof of your house is, or how efficiently the plumbing works? You are more likely to receive kudos for your paint choice or granite counter-top. When considerinng the investment in PV - which is a great technology in my view - consider this checklist.

System
Modular installation
Comprehensive system warranty
Complete system manual (spec. sheets not enough)
Power backup options
Must meet all electrical code requirements
Dedicated support phone # and email
Pre-defined service package
Certified electrician installed or master electrician inspected/commissioned
Monitoring – system monitor as an option should customers wish to have remote monitor located in home

Panels
CSA or equivalent certified panels
Minimum 150 W panel size
MC-connected panels
Envertor
UL 1741 complaint
Sized according to panels supplied
Modular inverter so that system can be expanded at a later date

Connectivity
Out-door certified cables for all exposed cabling
Conduit or Tek cable for all runs after combiner box
Combiner box must be fused or supplied with breakers
Lightning protection ( DC and AC )
Pole and roof mount options ( both adjustable not just flat roof mounting )
Cables sized for at least 1kW of expansion capability
Accessible (read: outdoor) disconnect switch
