The Colour of Light

Compact fluorescents are great in many ways but I want to find one that emits similar colours to a tungsten bulb. I have experimented with many varieties of CF’s but even the ones describing warm natural tones, all seem too green to my eyes. I’ve heard similar complaints from numerous clients and interested folk but haven’t found the solution. Will the solution come in the next generation of lighting technology? Other complaints I’ve heard about compact fluorescents have to do with the dimming capability.  Apparently they are not identical to tungsten bulbs since they cannot be dimmed in the same way.  What is the solution to these problems? I will write about it when I find out.

I know what you mean Mark.I have a fantastic way to reduce the consumption for lighting in my house.I switch a bulb to a CFL,and then my wife never turns that light on again!
Talk to a Gaffer or DP in the film biz,and see if you can borrow a colour meter for the weekend.take colour meter readings of tungsten bulbs, and note the numbers, then try and match them with various CFLs.
Using daylight balanced CFLs,in conjunction with a medium yellow/light orange lamp shade(or paper lantern)can sort of resemble tungsten. You will never get the “hard light” of a tungsten bulb(although CFLs are sort of “harsh")
I use CFLs in the kids rooms, the basement, the basement stairwell etc,and halogen in the kitchen, upstairs hall, and as task lighting in the living room.I still have a conventional tungsten bulb in the dining room.Food under a CFL is a great way to diet.
