Call for Nominations open for 2008 Green Toronto Awards

City of Toronto News Release
January 7, 2008
Nominations open for 2008 Green Toronto Awards

Nominations for the fourth annual Green Toronto Awards – the City of Toronto’s environmental awards of excellence – are now open. The Green Toronto Awards recognize and celebrate the individuals, community groups and companies that are leading the way to a greener and healthier Toronto.

“The Green Toronto Awards recognize the people, groups and businesses that help make Toronto one of the greenest cities in the world,” said Mayor David Miller. “It’s a testament to Torontonians, and to our great city, that so many people and organizations step up where they can, and join us in showing leadership on the environment.”

The Green Toronto Awards recognize leadership in 10 categories: community projects; youth projects; energy conservation; environmental awareness; green design; green roof; health; leadership; market transformation; and water efficiency. Each of the 10 winners will receive a Green Toronto Award and $5,000 to donate to the environmental organization of their choice.

“The Green Toronto Awards give everyone the opportunity to participate with the City in recognizing environmental leadership,” said Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone. “I encourage people to let us know who the leaders are, and submit nominations for this year’s awards.”

The awards are presented in partnership by the City of Toronto and Green Living Enterprises, with the generous support of corporate and media sponsors. Corporate sponsors for the 2008 awards include Enbridge, Loblaw Companies Limited, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Stantec Architecture Limited, Toronto Community Foundation, Toronto Hydro, Toronto Water, and the Green Living Show.

The deadline for nominations and supporting materials is Friday, February 29 at 5 p.m. Nominees must operate in and/or directly effect the environment of the City of Toronto, and their program must have been operational in 2007. Elected officials, City of Toronto staff and previous winners of Green Toronto Awards are not eligible.
